The Cuban Society for Telecommunications, Cubatel S.A. is turning 25 in 2021. Our entity is reaching its two and a half decades integrating technologies with ever-renewed goals.

Assuming the role of Telecommunications Infrastructure Operator - which allows us to manage our own networks and those of third parties - and associated with this the launch of a new service, already with accumulated experience in the business field, imposes new challenges on our organization. Effects of the blockade on the communications and information technology sector, including telecommunications in Cuba during the period from April 2019 to March 2020

The economic damages and losses caused by the blockade of the communications and computing sector, including telecommunications in Cuba during the period from April 2019 to March 2020, are estimated at 64 million 274 thousand 42 dollars.

As in previous years, Empresa de Telecomunicaciones de Cuba S.A. (ETECSA) continues to be the entity with the greatest losses, registering approximately 97 percent of the total amount.

The blockade constitutes the main impediment to a better flow of information and a wider access to the Internet and information and communication technologies (ICT) by Cubans. By making connectivity more difficult and more expensive in the country, conditioning access to platforms and technologies, and using cyberspace to try to subvert the Cuban political and legal system, this policy negatively affects the development of communications in Cuba.

Among the effects registered in this area, the following stand out:

ETECSA cannot carry out interconnections with international operators directly in the United States, where the main interconnection nodes are located, so it is obliged to extend the international network with nodes in the United Kingdom, Jamaica and Venezuela. This leads to additional expenses of about 10 million 637 thousand 200 dollars.

As a consequence of the activation of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act, the AMERICAN AIRLINES company decided to suspend the direct postal service between the US and Cuba. As a result, the Cuban Post Business Group (GECC, in Spanish) had to find an alternative to guarantee the Universal Postal Service in the national territory and decided to direct it through Panama, as an intermediary country. This action increased the price of the rates, which represented losses for the Cuban postal operator of 6 thousand 736 dollars.

During the summer stage, characterized by a strong presence of Covid-19, the group of the company Cubatel S.A. continues working to fulfill the commitments agreed during the year, without diminishing the importance of the biosecurity measures that must be adopted in such circumstances to preserve the health of all.

We worked together with the client ETECSA - particularly in the province of Cienfuegos - to expand the telephony capacities in the territory. The work that had been carried out since the beginning of 2020 in Holguín continued, where work was fundamentally carried out on the development of the telecommunications infrastructure to provide service to several legal entities in the province. Similarly, works were carried out in Artemisa until July and in the capital of all Cubans, actions continue with the greatest protection for the lives of workers and the communities where they are working.

The use of the chlorinated solution for effective hand washing and the rules of physical distancing directed by the health authorities are a constant in the daily work of our group. Responsibility is the watchword in the fight against Covid-19.

Under these conditions, Cubatel S.A. directs its efforts to provide an excellent service to customers, maintain compliance with economic indicators such as productivity and income, all with a high sense of belonging.
